Welcome to Margdarshan. (M9)1
In our day to day life, we come across many collections like flock of birds, herds of cattle, crowd of people etc. In mathematics also, we use many collections, like collection of numbers, points, triangles, circles etc.
Now consider two examples: collection of five best singers of India and collection of first five novels written by Baba Kadam. Which of the collection will have same constituents, universally? Obviously, the second collection will have fixed answer. Why? It is because the second set is well defined collection of objects. In first collection, the term “best” has different interpretations by different people.
So we define a set as follows:
A set is a well defined collection of objects. The constituents of set are called its elements. Set is denoted by capital letter and its elements are denoted by small letters. The Greek letter, ∈, is used to denote the phrase “belongs to”. E.g. Let A be the set of vowels of English alphabets then we can say that A is well- defined collection of objects and hence a set.
Also, A={a,e,i,o,u}.
We will write a∈A and b∉A, i.e., “a” belongs to A but “b” does not belong to A. It means that “a” is an element of A but “b” is not an element of A. Also, it should be noted that no element of the set will be repeated. E.g. Let X be the set of letters of the word MATHEMATICS then we write as X={M,A,T,H,E,I,C,S} and we will not repeat M,A,T as they have already been listed in the set.
Also, n(A) = number of elements in set A
We will denote number sets by following notations:
N: Set of Natural Numbers
W: Set of Whole Numbers
Z: Set of Integers
Q: Set of Rational Numbers
T: Set of Irrational Numbers
R: Set of Real Numbers
Z+: Set of Positive Integers
Q+: Set of Positive Rational Numbers
R+: Set of Positive Real Numbers
Representation of Set
Let A be the set of first five prime numbers and set B={2,3,5,7,11} then are A and B same or different? These two sets are same and these are two different ways to represent the same set.
There are two different methods to represent a set:
(i) Set-Builder form
(ii) Roster form / Tabular form
X = {M, A, T, H, E, I, C, S write

Set
Definition
Example
1. Empty Set/Null Set/Void
set Notations: {},ϕ
A set having no element
A={x:x is negative root of
x2−5x+6=0}={}
2. Singleton Set
A set having single
element only
B={x:x is even prime number}={2}
3. Finite Set
If n(A)=finite number, i.e.,
no, of elements are countable
C={x:x is a consonant
of English alphabet}
4. Infinite Set
If n(A) is infinite
D=Set of Natural Numbers
5. Equal Sets
Two sets A and B are equal
if they have same elements.
e.g. A={x:x is a vowel
of English alphabet}
B={a,e,i,o,u}
